The Windmill series began while I was spending a lot of time going out to Palm Springs while living in Los Angeles. On the drive out from LA you drive through many fields of wind turbines. These fields have been growing ever since the early 90ā€™s. I loved driving through them in my friends big old Suburban feeling like Iā€™m driving through the Sequoia woods. These quiet giants ever moving, posing for my imagination and paintings for years to come.

The Pumpjack series is the continuation of the Power series that I began with the Windmills. At first I began using these prehistoric looking machines as pieces of a landscape. Soon I realized that these characters all started to take on their own personalities and in turn each painting became a frame in a drama acted out by the characters involved.

Each painting begins by building the canvas up with many layers of gesso and then sanding it down to create a smooth and soft surface. For some pieces I apply a iron emulsion and oxidize the surface and in others I apply a thin layer of vibrant pigment and burnish it into the surface. Combining colors this way on the surface creates completely new and original color each time with a soft glossy finish. The final step is the silkscreening process. This part of the process is quick and really gratifying. A single swipe across the canvas and a swift separation of silk screen from the canvas and the piece is complete.
