Born in rural Avon Lake, Ohio, Kristin Jai Klosterman began working with her hands at a young age, a direct influence from her father, a craftsman. Building on this early influence and her natural inclination for painting and sketching, Kristin headed to the Palm Beach School of the Arts at the age of 14. While continuing her education at The New World School of the Arts in Miami, Kristin ventured into the world of fashion modeling, a life that afforded her the opportunity to work with top photographers like Bruce Weber, Ellen von Unwerth and Patrick Demarchelier.
While in the presence of these artists at the height of their success, Kristin began to envision her own artistry as a tangible profession.
Upon graduation, Kristin traveled throughout the U.S and Europe, absorbing as much art and culture each new locale could offer. At 20, Kristin settled in Venice, California where she soon opened her own art gallery, Two Girls and A Dog, which she helmed and curated for several years. Two Girls and a Dog showcased local emerging artists in addition to Kristin’s own paintings.
Not long after, Kristin began apprenticing for Laddie John Dill, an award-winning contemporary painter and sculptor. From Dill, Kristin learned the fundamentals of running an art studio, working with clients and coordinating with the city of Los Angeles on large-scale projects.
Eventually Kristin began working side by side with Dill, harnessing and manipulating the tools and skills she had learned from him to create life-size projects. Together they created a freestanding 30’ sculpture made of cor-ten steel that is now in Santa Ana, California, in addition to a 20’ suspended sculpture commissioned for the Jackson Memorial Hospital in Jackson, Tennessee.
Kristin now finds herself immersed in a community of Venice artists, namely Dill, Larry Bell, Robert Graham and many others. Artistically, their influence is invaluable; through shared experiences, they allow Kristin to similarly view her own work in a spontaneous, organic manner, helping her to build on her creative process and further develop as an artist. She has broadened her chosen medium of painting and sculptures and moved into the realm of mixed media, where she has developed a process of manipulating oxidized metals combined with oil paint, wax, silk-screens and salt water.
She travels the world extensively to places through out China and Japan to further broaden her perspective and range. These journeys along with the constant flow of cultures through her hometown of Venice, California help act as continual rejuvenation and inspiration.
Kristin lives and works in Graham’s former studio, a vast, open space that has allowed her to view her work in a limitless 3-D world where she can fully explore the world of sculpture in addition to her many other ongoing projects. Kristin resides in the heart of Venice Beach, where the eclectic landscape and people serve as constant sources of energy and motivation.
Currently, she is continuing her series on “Power”. Kristin has been developing her own process of contrasting elements, one being the hard raw metals of her sculpture series and the other being the soft delicate silks that she painstakingly hand paints. These combinations of different natural elements further define the balance of the feminine and masculine qualities that flow through most of Kristin’s work.
